Amblyopia and LASIK
Amblyopia is a vision problem that is also known as lazy eye. The condition
occurs when central vision does not develop properly, usually in one
eye, so the brain ignores the flawed vision in that eye, thus causing
functional blindness. Amblyopia can be the result of trauma to the eye
or a strong, uncorrected refractive error, such as nearsightedness or
farsightedness. If left untreated, amblyopia can be extremely damaging
to total vision.
Most cases of amblyopia are diagnosed in young children, under the
age of six. The condition can be best treated before vision is fully
developed. Treatments include vision therapy (often with an eye patch),
specialized eye drops, a stronger prescription for the refractive problem
or surgery.
LASIK surgery can be used to treat amblyopia that occurs as a result of
a refractive problem. Because the condition usually occurs in young children,
LASIK is not a common treatment for amblyopia. Eyeglasses or contact lenses
are frequently used to correct the problem.
