Astigmatism Correction

Astigmatism is the most common vision problem: an irregularly shaped cornea. Often accompanying myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism may cause slightly blurred vision that worsens over time.

Until recent years, eyeglasses were the only way to correct astigmatism. Today, however, soft contact lenses, called toric lenses, are specially designed to correct astigmatism. Eyeglasses are still an option, as well, as is refractive surgery.

Several types of refractive surgery have the ability to correct astigmatism. LASIK surgery, the most common refractive surgery, is often used for astigmatism correction. Another popular surgery called photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) also smoothes out the oblong cornea to correct astigmatism.
