Custom LASIK

Custom LASIK is the “next generation” of LASIK surgery, recently approved by the FDA. Using precise measurements, custom LASIK procedures actually tailor the treatment to the individual vision requirements. This means that patients receiving custom LASIK treatments will have much better results, on average, than those receiving standard LASIK.

Prior to custom LASIK surgery, the patient’s eye is measured using “wavefront” technology, which facilitates custom LASIK surgery by creating a 3-D corneal map. The detailed map guides the laser used in custom LASIK, providing numerous details about the small irregularities in the eye that influence vision. Prior to custom LASIK surgery, patients with the same prescription would receive the same LASIK treatment, while in a custom LASIK procedure, two patients with identical prescriptions will probably receive at least slightly different custom LASIK treatments, tailored to the specific size and shape of their eyes, as well as prescription. Custom LASIK allows the doctor to correct such problems as poor night vision, glare, and halos, which non- custom LASIK procedures usually cannot correct (and sometimes actually cause). In fact, some doctors use the custom LASIK surgery to rectify issues that arise from other LASIK or refractive surgeries.

Like any surgery, custom LASIK has some risks and may not be appropriate for all vision problems. To discuss custom LASIK in more detail, you may wish to contact a doctor who has experience in custom LASIK procedures.
