LASIK and Dry Eyes
Dry eye syndrome is a condition that causes discomfort due to lack
of lubrication or moisture in the eye. The condition can be the result
of a number of things, including: medications, certain systemic diseases,
hormonal changes, the natural aging process, climate or long-term contact
lens wear.
Treatments for dry eyes include special eye drops, tear duct plugs
or, in severe cases, tear duct surgery. Dry eyes caused by medications
may result in the need for a prescription change, while dry eyes caused
by contact lenses may result in a change of lens type or a discontinuation
of contact lens use.
LASIK or refractive surgery is not recommended for patients with dry
eyes. In fact, dry eye syndrome may disqualify a patient from receiving
LASIK or refractive surgery, as the condition may increase the risk
of slower healing after surgery. Many doctors will want to remedy the
dry eye problem before performing LASIK or any other vision correction
surgery.
