Edema
Edema is the medical term for swelling. While edema usually refers
to a swelling of the body, it can also apply to facial swelling, which
may be caused by allergic reaction or infection of the eyes.
Conjunctivitis, an infection of the conjunctiva - membrane lining the
eyelids - has many causes, including virus, bacteria and allergies.
Allergic conjunctivitis, usually caused by airborne allergens, can lead
to facial edema, which can be relieved with cold compresses.
Facial edema may also be caused by a stye, or growth on the inner or
outer eyelid. This swelling around the eye will likely subside as the
stye heals within a few days. Applying warm compresses to the stye helps
speed up its healing process and may relieve the accompanying edema
around the eye.
