Eye Allergies and Irritation

Eye allergies occur when there is an overreaction to a substance that comes into contact with the eye. Many airborne substances, such as pollen, pet dander, mold and dust, cause the eyes to experience allergy symptoms.

Eye irritation due to allergies manifests itself through red, swollen, tearing or itchy eyes. Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, can also be triggered by allergies and can cause irritation and inflammation of the affected eye.

To treat eye irritation due to allergies, sufferers are encouraged to avoid the allergen. If eye irritation due to allergies does occur, over-the-counter antihistamines can clear up the red, itchy and watery symptoms. If you are a contact lens wearer and you are experiencing eye irritation due to allergies, it may be best to avoid contact wear until symptoms subside.
