Problems That Can Occur From LASIK
LASIK problems span a wide range of possibilities, from minor
temporary irritation to more severe and permanent LASIK problems such
as blindness. When an individual investigates LASIK surgery,
the issue of LASIK problems should be fully examined. Patients who
are otherwise good candidates, but unwilling to risk potential LASIK
problems would be best advised to seek another route for vision correction.
A number of LASIK problems result from or are increased by pre-existing
conditions. For instance, a number of minor LASIK problems involving
less than perfect post-operative vision (in which the vision is less
than 20/20) are LASIK problems that stem from the abnormal vision the
patient exhibited prior to surgery. Some LASIK problems, including dry
eyes, are exacerbations of pre-existing complications with the tear
ducts or other issues. LASIK problems should be fully discussed with
the doctor scheduled to perform the surgery, with specific LASIK problems
for which the patient is at an increased risk given high priority. After
surgery, some LASIK problems can be addressed through simple treatments
such as eyedrops, while a small number of LASIK problems require additional
surgeries, and some are beyond correction.
While it is certainly true that LASIK problems are the exception rather
than the rule, any number of things can go wrong. LASIK problems can
often be avoided through proper screening of patients and appropriate
pre and post-operative care. LASIK problems should, however, be thoroughly
considered before the patient commits to surgery, and all potential
LASIK problems should be discussed with a physician well in advance.
