Low Vision Products and Aids
Low vision refers to a loss of sight that cannot be corrected with
eyeglasses, contact lenses or surgery. The condition affects about 20
percent of middle-aged adults. Low vision occurs with various degrees
of severity - ranging from partially sighted to legally blind - and
symptoms - from blind spots and poor night vision with glare to almost
total vision loss.
Although low vision is uncorrectable, there are a number of low vision
aids and products that are designed to ease the severity of vision loss
and restore vision while performing everyday tasks. Low vision aids
and products come in two forms: visual aids and non-optical devices.
Examples of visual aids for low vision include: telescopic glasses,
lenses that filter light, magnifying glasses, hand magnifiers, closed-circuit
television and reading prisms.
Non-optical low vision aids and products include: text reading software,
check guides, high contrast or talking clocks and watches, and large-print
publications. Special light fixtures and audio tapes also help people
with low vision maintain a normal lifestyle around their vision loss.
