Blade-free LASIK procedure

May 26, 2005

According to LASIK surgeons, there is a new blade-free way of performing the corrective eye surgery.

Doctors at the Lansing Opthalmology in Michigan believe the blade-free LASIK procedure is even safer and more precise than the former methods. Traditionally, LASIK is performed by making a flap on the surface of the eye using a blade, but the latest method introduces laser instead of the flap cutting.

In addition to claiming safer, more precise results, doctors think the latest in LASIK methods will allow a wider range of patients to benefit from the surgical results. Patients with thinner corneas and certain types of corneal problems that do not do well with the old flap-cutting technique can qualify for the intralase LASIK option.

After undergoing a series of eye tests to get accurate readings of the patient's eye, doctors can determine if the patient is an ideal candidate for the intralase LASIK method. Patients usually experience some sensation in the procedure that takes about five to 10 minutes per eye, but the actual time it takes the laser to reshape the eye lasts just a minute or less.

Complications accompany any type of surgical procedure, and the intralase LASIK surgery is no different. Though doctors say complications are rare, the may include infection, healing problems and dry eyes.
