Fruit is Food for Your Eyes
June 17, 2004
An apple a day may now keep the eye doctor away, according to a study from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. The study, which looked at data from nearly 120,000 adult patients, found that both men and women who consumed three or more servings of unspecified fruit each day had a 36 percent decreased risk of macular degeneration than their fruit-deprived peers. They did not find the same effect from vegetables, vitamins or carotenoids, the compounds that add color to fruits and vegetables.
There is no cure for macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss for people age 65 and older. Doctors are hoping this study, which is the first large-scale study to link diet to the vision disease, will encourage further examinations into the role that food plays in preserving vision.
