LASIK May Be Safe For Patients With Systemic Diseases

June 9, 2006

Recent research shows that patients with systemic diseases may have LASIK eye surgery safely with predictable results.

The new study, which was published in the medical journal Ophthalmology , evaluated the outcomes of LASIK on 141 patients with certain systemic diseases and compared the results to a control group.

Researchers found few statistical differences between the groups and concluded that the procedure can be performed safely and effectively in patients with stable and controlled systemic diseases.

LASIK has previously been inadvisable for individuals with systemic diseases including autoimmune connective-tissue disorders, psoriasis, intestinal inflammatory diseases, diabetes mellitus, and history of keloid formation.
