Summer weather could affect LASIK outcomes
July 15, 2005
According to an ophthalmologist at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, higher humidity weather conditions can affect LASIK results, leaving eye patients with under correction. Based on his research, 15 percent of people who had surgery in the summer were under corrected, but the laser can be adjusted to accommodate depending on the weather conditions.
Today, under correction only happens two to three percent of the time. Candidates for LASIK in the past were told to avoid surgery in the summer if they were worried about under correction, but humidity also occurs in the winter. The under correcting, in the past, would sometimes require the patient to have something redone to help with the little bit of vision correction the laser missed.
Because extreme dry weather can also affect the results of LASIK, patients are encouraged to discuss ways of adjusting the laser to address the possibility of under correction prior to the procedure.
